The social web loves animals. Just think about how many adorable puppy pictures or kitten videos flood your social streams throughout the day. It’s true—cuteness rules all in social. So which cat food brand is winning in social media? We’ll find out in this week’s Social Media Face Off.
In order to compare the brands in social, we set up search streams for each in the uberVU platform. We’ve compared the results from the past two weeks to determine our winner.
The claws are out. Which cat food brand has the most lives in social?
Round One: Mentions
Whiskas takes the early lead with 8,680 mentions, pulling ahead of Friskies’ 7,071 mentions. You can see on the line graph that Friskies had a spike in mentions from December 11th to December 13th. The cat food brand united the feline stars of the internet—Grumpy Cat, Colonel Meow, Oskar the Blind Cat, Nala Cat, and Hamilton the Hipster Cat—in a YouTube video called “It’s Hard To Be a Cat at Christmas.” Friskies published the video on December 10th and worked hard to promote it, promising to donate 100,000 cans of food to cat charities if it reached 500,000 views. Since we already know cat videos do well in social, it’s no surprise that video was heavily shared, resulting in over two million views to date. As a thank you for the overwhelming response, Friskies pledged to donate 100,000 extra cans.
Winner: Whiskas
Round Two: Sentiment
While Friskies’ video may not have won the brand more mentions than Whiskas it does seem to have helped in sentiment. Response to the video and the charitable donation was overwhelmingly positive, resulting in 37% of Friskies’ mentions registering as positive and only 4% registering as negative. This easily beats out the 17% positivity and 8% negativity posted by Whiskas.
Winner: Friskies
Round Three: Engagement
With the score all tied up we’ll compare each brand’s engagement metrics on Facebook and Twitter to determine our winner. Whiskas wins in RTs but Friskies comes back to win in both Likes and Shares.
Winner: Friskies
Overall Winner: Friskies
With wins in sentiment and engagement we declare the winner of this Social Media Face Off to be Friskies. Cat videos…..they win social every time.
