Integrate Social Media with Email/ NewslettersLast post we talked about how to integrate social media with traditional media, which is critically important for supporting your brand and maximizing your ROI, but it’s also REALLY hard.  Today, we have social media expert, Michael Stelzner, from Social Media Examiner talking to my social media marketing class at Howard University School of Business about how to integrate social media and email, especially newsletters.

Here are some of the take-home message from his presentation:

  • When you integrate social media and email you get a powerful combination that’s pretty natural, especially when compared with the problems trying to integrate social media with other types of traditional media.
  • Relying on Facebook, Twitter, or another social platform as your ONLY means to communicate with brand followers is dangerous — the owners of these platforms can change their terms of service leaving you without a means to contact your fans.  When you integrate social media with email, you retain means to contact your fans.
  • Reciprocal links help build engagement — links in social media to sign up for the newsletter and links in the newsletter to join the brand’s social network.  When you integrate social media with newsletters they reinforce each other to generate more engagement.
  • Newsletters offer valuable content and give brands a means to promote products to subscribers — so they reflect a win-win situation.  Integrating social media with newsletters increases opportunities to share.
