Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Flipboard 0 Following on from Deborah’s infographic about Rel=Author, I thought I’d write a blog about how Rel=Publisher can help your social media efforts, increase brand awareness and raise the profile of your website. What is Rel=Publisher? Before I explain Rel=Publisher, it helps to understand Rel=Author. Rel=Author allows you to connect the user profile of your individual authors from their Google+ page to their author bio page on your site and allows them to show up as the creator of a piece of content in the search engine results. This can create more authority for your site as the authors writing for your site gain credibility for the content they create across the internet. Rel=Publisher, however, is aimed at the website itself and works with the Google+ account for your brand. This connects your official Google+ page and your website. How do I use Rel=Publisher? Rel=Author is used on the individual pages on your blog so that when an author creates a post they are seen by Google as being the author. However Rel=Publisher is used across the whole site on all pages. So, instead of using the tag on your individual posts, you can use this across every page of your website. The tag is very simple to use. Firstly set up the Google+ page for your website, if you have not already done so. Having a good following on Google+ can help you to get more from this process so it’s worth spending some time building up your social media following whilst working on this to help the authority of your Google+ page. To add the tag simply copy the address of your Google+ profile. When you copy this address make sure that the URL doesn’t contain two folders called O and U (making the URL https://plus.google.com/o/u/108882346284359553725/) and that you remove the /posts wording from the end of the link too. Once you have the address, add it to the tag as shown below: <link rel=’publisher’ href=’ADDRESS HERE’ /> So, the Rel=Publisher tag for the Red Rocket Media site looks like this: <link rel=’publisher’ href=’https://plus.google.com/108882346284359553725/’ /> Add this into the <head> section of your website so it is visible on all pages – it’s probably best to use the template to do this. If you run a WordPress blog, you will be able to add this using a plugin. Check to make sure it’s working Once you have set up the tag on your site and put it live, you can check to make sure this is working correctly by using Google’s Structured Data Testing Tool. Just add in the URL of one of your pages – such as the homepage – and click Preview. This will show you if you have set up the Publisher page correctly. In the below image, I’ve tested the Red Rocket Media homepage which shows that we have a Publisher (us) but not an author on this page, which is exactly what we want on a service page of the site. Rel=Publisher can help you receive the credit for the content you create which helps the authority of your brand across Google+ and in the Google search results. Using this in conjunction with Rel=Author on your site is highly recommended for both SEO and social media promotion.
