Today is Star Wars day. The 4th of May – May the fourth be with you.
When Star Wars first arrived in our cinemas, I was 11. There was no Twitter, no YouTube, we had just got over celebrating the Queen’s silver jubilee with street parties and TV specials. There was no cable or satellite TV and no Channel 5, or even Channel 4.
I queued with my family and hundreds of other people around the block of the Odeon in Bristol to see the film one Saturday afternoon in 1977. The hype was huge because the movie had been released some months earlier in the USA and we had watched several documentaries about it on TV.
Now, Star Wars is still a force to be reckoned with and it is still a provider of great content. Not only do we have today, May the fourth, but we also have Speak like Yoda day coming up. Thanks to the world wide web, there was also a campaign internationally some years ago to have Jedi recognised as an official religion.
As a tribute to Star Wars, and for the benefit of fans, here’s a quick round-up of some of the online shrines to the fantasy world that is Star Wars. It may be a galaxy far, far away, but it is very much alive and well on the web.
