Get excited, social media fans: the third annual Social Media Day is right around the corner! That’s right: on June 30, you get a chance to celebrate all things social media.

Hold the phone. Social Media Day? This is an actual thing? How did I not know about this? What does one do to celebrate? Is there a funny hat I can wear??

According to Mashable, the commemorative day began as a way to “recognize the digital revolution,” and the day itself is officially recognized by the states of Nevada and Arizona, as well as the cities of New York, Toronto, Dublin, Las Vegas, Reno, San Jose and San Carlos, CA. Nevada is the most recent entity to issue an official proclamation; I think my absolute favorite thing about the executive order from Governor Brian Sandoval is that the proclamation contains an actual #hashtag. How cool and non-government-y is that?

Anyway, there are lots of things you can do to celebrate the big day. You can set up or attend an actual Meetup event in your area, use the #smday hashtag on your favorite social media platform, and, uh, well – I think that’s about it.

Lack of actual holiday traditions and festivities aside, I believe it is important to take some time to reflect on how much social media really has impacted our lives – from our personal relationships, to our business practices, to the way we communicate in general – in our own local communities and across the globe.

I know it’s not the 30th yet, but I’d like to know: how has the digital revolution (social media, especially) affected your life, your business? And, more importantly, what will you do to celebrate?!
