At Bubble, we pride ourselves on dishing out helpful advice to digital job seekers on a regular basis, but today I thought it might be nice to tell you a story about how I used social media to get this great job – and offer some tips on how you can do the same.
The story starts when I was doing freelance PR work but wanted something a little more steady, so I trawled endless generic job sites, contacted recruiters and asked friends if they knew of any jobs going, but nothing really jumped out at me or seemed relevant.
Cursing the lack of opportunities and close to crying into my Coco Pops, I decided to take a different approach to my job hunt and searched for “digital jobs” on Twitter and came across Bubble Jobs!
The jobs they advertised sounded interesting, they appeared friendly and approachable, so I decided to make the most of their openness and ask for some advice!
I direct messaged the then-Social Media Manager Anna asking for tips on how to make the move into digital, and she was really helpful and suggested getting into social media.
My social approach impressed as she suggested I apply for the Social Media Manager position here at Bubble Jobs, and offered to forward my application on to her boss.
Good news travels fast, because later that day I had sent Anna my application and was immediately invited for an interview!
So I made the trip to beautiful Tarporley, did my best to impress, and here I am today writing this blog for you from my desk at the one and only Bubble HQ!
Now, what can you take from this story?
Well, I wouldn’t have even known that Bubble were hiring if I didn’t reach out to them directly via social media, and contacting them that way showed that I can communicate clearly online.
Here’s some top tips on how to find your own job via social media:
1.) Connect With Employers
What made me stand out when interviewing for this job was that I made my first connection with Bubble on social media, building a relationship with the company before applying for a job. If you can demonstrate your communication skills then you’re already head and shoulders above the rest!
2.) Don’t Be Afraid To Ask For Help
The whole reason I contacted Bubble in the first place was to ask for help with my job search, which led to Anna suggesting that I apply for their social media manager vacancy. Social media managers and recruiters aren’t monsters, they want someone to fill that vacancy, so don’t be scared to ask for advice – it might just show how assertive you are!
3.) Build An Online Presence
Even when you’re not directly communicating with companies you’d like to work for, you can still show off. Contribute to LinkedIn groups, Google+ communities or Twitter chats around the particular career you’re interested in to show off your knowledge. That way, when the hiring managers do want to check you out, they’ll see that you’re actively interested in that area.
4.) Clean Up Your Digital Footprint
Before you start connecting with employers, contributing to discussions and basically promoting yourself on social media, make sure there’s nothing on there that could incriminate you in any way. I’m talking boozy pictures, aggressive language etc. I’m not saying you can’t have those things – just set them to private!
So there we go, that’s my story on how I got my job via social media – and some tips about how you can do the same!
