Following a recent iOS update, Foursquare added a new ratings system to its Explore feature. This new ratings system will give Foursquare users a quick glance at how much people like the businesses featured in Explorer’s personalized recommendations on both mobile and PC versions.
Unlike other review sites like Yelp and Google+ Local, Foursquare utilizes its tips, likes, dislikes, loyalty, and actual check-ins to create a score from 1 to 10 for each location listed. Check out this blog from VentureBeat blog to learn more about these new Foursquare ratings.

Myself along with thousands of other business owners and/or yelpers hate yelp and its CEO, Jeremy Stoppelman, because yelp filters reviews and they are constantly being accused of extortion practices.

So I’m glad to see foursquare try to take on yelp, and I’m going to support them by contributing my reviews and allocating my advertising dollars to help promote them.
As a small business owner, I’m curious about how foursquare rating system works. Here where I live, people can “check in” a place without actually buying anything. Very simple, you see a seemingly luxurious and expensive place, come near it, then “check in”, then you post in your facebook that you’ve visited the place. You “upgrade your status”. That’s how Foursquare works where I live mostly. My coffeeshop is filled with loyal and repeat customers and many of them queue just to get seated. And I got low rating. I can’t even see how the rating review works. Is it because I don’t include foursquare in my marketing strategy? I don’t offer anything to mayor or anyone who checks in foursquare website simply because I don’t like it, and it was my customers who created the accounts. My “Tips review” section filled with positive feedbacks. Yet an expensive restaurant, barely any guests/customers, filled with complaints and negative feedback in its “Tips review” actually got way higher rating than my business. I’m puzzled. What concerns me the most, The rating shows up at the internet right away! I don’t want my place to be rated by vague system.
