Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Flipboard 0 A recent study by Unruly found that 40% of the top 1000 most shared Instagram videos were created by big brands, not individuals, in September 2013. Furthermore, these branded videos accounted for 4 out of the 5 most shared Instagram videos in September. So what should your business do? For companies just dipping their foot into the video space, don’t worry – Instagram videos are short and sweet, and you can do it yourself. Although big brands hire individuals who are dedicated to producing these short form videos, no one has really mastered the viral video equation, so there is no reason why your video can’t come out on top. Here’s some production guidelines we use to help you along the way. First comes the idea. Do not be overly promotional. Think to yourself, would anyone outside of my friends and family want to see this? If the answer is no, then don’t waste time and valuable resources. Typically people either want to be entertained or informed, so pick one of those themes. Maybe there is a useful fact no one knows, but you can display on Instagram video or maybe you have a hilarious joke you can put into video form. Whatever approach you take with your Instagram video, do not just talk about your company. Then comes the doing. Making a video can be a daunting task, but it can be done. Social Fresh nicely lays out the top 5 apps for creating Instagram videos, so try one of those if you’re stuck on production. Remember to consider your lighting, frame, and sound when shooting the video. Next is title and distribution. Make a witty title, not just “Funny video of xyz”. Think: What would I want to click? Once you film the video, send it over to friends and family to make sure it is universally funny/a good video, and then get your promotional hat on. Without a doubt you will publish your video on your own pages, but also make sure to send it around to influencers and anyone that could potentially be interested in your video topic. Hopefully it’ll get picked up by a big time blogger, who will drive traffic. Then learn from what you did. Was the first Instagram video a flop? Don’t worry about that! Learn from your mistakes on what went well and what simply did not work. Unruly is coming out with a tool that will help videographers optimize their short form video, so take a look at some tools out there that can also help. User-generated, short-term video is not going anywhere soon, so I suggest your company jump on the bandwagon now. Anyone have success with Instagram video? Leave notes in the comments.
