Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Flipboard 0 Many people, tired with their overuse, have dismissed QR codes and no longer view them as interesting or fresh means of promotion. However, the Guinness QR cup is proof that creativity can give new life to any idea. After pouring a dark Guinness into the cup, the QR code is revealed. It is visible with lighter beer as well, but only fully functional when Guinness is used. By scanning the code with your smartphone, you immediately engage in a number of social activities such as; sending tweets about your pint, updating your Facebook status, a 4 square check in, and invitations for friends to come join you. The QR cup definitely creates that elusive engagement component in social media. Time will tell if these QR cups are successful, or if they too will be viewed as a passing fad. The surprise factor will no doubt encourage excitement around these cups in bars and on social networks. The buzz generated will most likely (if it hasn’t already) create a sort of scavenger hunt for the cups. Although the lifetime for excitement like this in social media is not very long, this idea is exciting and encourages users to engage with their friends first and foremost. That is the crucial although often forgotten aspect of social media that many brands and businesses should take note of. Creating conversations between consumers and their friends in the context of your product is the advantage social media marketing gives to businesses. It will be interesting to see if this Guinness campaign will usher in a new wave of QR code creativity. What do you think of the Guinness QR cup?
