It’s been twenty years since the Spice Girls released their hit song “Wannabe” and this week, the song got a fresh new look. Their 1996 tune was remade into a powerful girl power anthem by Project Everyone and it quickly went viral, amassing over 620,000 views.

The goal of Project Everyone is to help share the United Nations’ global goals “with all 7 billion people on this planet.” They also raise awareness around other sustainable development goals such as ending extreme poverty and stopping climate change. Their “Wannabe” video raised awareness for gender equality and women’s rights by sharing one important message: #WhatIReallyReallyWant.

The UN’s Global Goals for Sustainable Development offers up goals to make the world a better place for everyone by 2030. One of the Sustainable Development Goals is gender equality, which has been put into the spotlight as women around the world fight to climb the ladder of development. Being that half the world’s population are women, that goal has been put into full focus by activists and celebrities in recent years.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development calls for gender equality and female empowerment. “The achievement of full human potential and of sustainable development is not possible if one half of humanity continues to be denied its full human rights and opportunities,” the agenda reads. “Women and girls must enjoy equal access to quality education, economic resources and political participation as well as equal opportunities with men and boys for employment, leadership and decision-making at all levels.”

The goals included in the “Wannabe” video include ending violence against girls, quality education for all girls, ending child marriage, and ensuring equal pay for equal work. Achieving these goals would help create a more equal world for all. Though women have come a long way, as the video concludes, they still have a long way to go.
