Smile a little bit bigger today, it’s World Smile Day!

World Smile Day, recognized on the first Friday of October, celebrates the adorable little smiley face that was created in 1963 by Harvey Ball. According to the World Smile Day website, the smiley face went on to become “the most recognizable symbol of good will and good cheer on the planet.”

After the smiley face became over-commercialized, Ball decided that there needed to be a dedicated day to celebrate “smiles and kind acts throughout the world.” The day, which is sponsored by the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation, is particularly special in Ball’s hometown of Worcester, MA.

Social media recognized the happy day with tweets, gifs and of course, passing on a smile.
