Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani has apologized after falsely claiming that Hillary Clinton had lied about being in New York on September 11, 2001.

Giuliani had claimed that Clinton was “neglecting her constituents” after 9/11, according to Snopes, and accused her of not being there the day of 9/11. He had said that he remembered that day and how Clinton helped get benefits for the injured, however, he said he never saw Clinton that day. “I heard her say one day she was there that day. I was there that day. I don’t remember seeing Hillary Clinton there. That was like when she said she had to run through gunfire. That turned out to be, what do we call it? A lie.”

After he made that claim, Twitter users began sharing the image of Clinton walking right next to Giuliani in the streets of New York. According to Snopes, Clinton was in New York on Sept. 12, however, she never claimed in the first place to have been present in the city on 9/11.

The day of 9/11, Clinton was in Washington, D.C. Clinton traveled to New York City the next day in a government plane since all commercial flights remained grounded. According to ABC News, upon arriving, she circled the World Trade Center in a helicopter then toured ground zero with Giuliani and then-Governor George Pataki.

“I made a mistake. I’m wrong and I apologize,” Giuliani, a Trump supporter, said, according to USA Today. After he was told about the photos and criticism circulating online, Giuliani added, “I probably deserve it.”
