Olympian Simone Biles and Final Five Teammates Meet Zac Efron in Rio

Simone Biles’s Olympic dreams are coming true in Rio. She has won four gold medals, landed on the cover of Sports Illustrated alongside swimmers Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky and now, the 19-year-old gymnast can say she finally met celebrity crush Zac Efron.

The actor surprised the Final Five team, who just made history, on the set of the TODAY show. The surprise was orchestrated by the show’s co-host Hoda Kotb. She had to question whether it was real life when Efron entered the room to give her a hug.

Just as Efron has been supporting the ladies of the Final Five for quite some time (from afar), so too has Simone Biles been crushing on Efron from afar for a while. According to CNN, it all started when Biles tweeted some heart emoji for Efron in 2013 (because who didn’t do that?) and then a year later, got a cardboard cutout of Efron, to which she admitted to giving a little kiss on the cheek (how the tables have turned).

Eventually, Biles appeared on “The EllenDeGeneres Show” and after gushing about Efron, DeGeneres “gifted her with a sparkly leotard covered with Efron’s face.” Presenting her with the gift, DeGeneres told her, “He doesn’t know that you have a crush on him, but I want you to get his attention. So I got you something to wear at the Olympics.”

A few months later, Efron thanked DeGeneres for the “heads up” and wished Biles good luck on the Olympic trials, which she just couldn’t help but to respond in all capital letters to thank him, refraining from passing out. Earlier this month, he then tweeted at her again to say, “So phenomenal a skill’s named after her. Congrats on sticking the Biles and qualifying for the finals.” After encouraging Efron to watch the next night’s team finals,the last conversation they exchanged before meeting in person, he tweeted once again.

The Final Five teammates, Biles, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian, later did a Facebook live chat, where Biles gushed over meeting Efron and joked about going on a date in Rio and getting married.

According to the TODAY show, since Efron is such a huge supporter of Team USA, he wanted to congratulate the Final Five in person. In an interview with Kotb and Matt Lauer Wednesday morning, Efron said, “Their story just blew my mind. When I found out Simone and this team were fans, I was like, ‘What kind of guy am I if I don’t show up?'”

This whole pizza-filled, celebrity crush encounter really deserves a gold medal.
