Last Saturday one member of a fighting couple learned the hard way that when you’re at a NBA game, kiss cam is always watching- always. During the Chicago Bulls vs. Boston Celtics game at Chicago’s United Center, kiss cam was in fine form as it highlighted the kisses of various couples at the event. The smooches ranged from shy pecks to enthusiastic embraces, several even complete with token drunk bro photo bombs.
However, one couple’s response to being featured caught the attention of kiss cam not one, but three times, one of which even included an appearance by beloved mascot Benny the Bull.
As the camera first captures the couple, who appear to be Celtics fans, the girl excitedly tries to get her boyfriend’s attention, though he seems to be engaged in a phone call. True to modern cultural standards, he waves her off impatiently in favor of his phone.
When kiss cam strike again, the girl, who appears to be getting a little embarrassed, becomes a more persistent in trying to interrupt the phone call. Though she resorts to light slapping, she again finds herself invisible to her distracted beau.
Kiss cam’s third check-in on the fighting couple finds the poor girl having given up as she sits with crossed arms next to her non-kissing sweetheart. This, however, is when she’s swept off her feet by another suitor who happens to be much hornier than her boyfriend… literally. That’s right, none other than Bull’s mascot Benny the Bull appears on the screen and treats the distracted man to a drink by proceeding to dump one right over his head. With that, the amorous bull picks up the maiden and dashes up into the bleachers, to the cheers of crowd who have watched the whole episode unfurl.
As hilarious as the video is, it almost seems a little too perfect, leading many to wonder if it was actually staged. The answer finally came in a statement by Bulls Manager of Corporate Communications Beth Esler, who confirmed that the fighting kiss cam couple where indeed actors performing a skit arranged to rally the crowd. Regardless, it seems to have worked, as the Bulls won the game 109-104 in overtime.
