Another top official has been ousted from the Trump administration. President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that Rex Tillerson was fired as secretary of state—and replaced by CIA Director Mike Pompeo.

Trump revealed on Twitter that Tillerson had been removed from his role. “Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State,” the president tweeted Tuesday morning. “He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!” The Washington Post first reported the firing.

The New York Times reports that “Tillerson learned he had been fired on Tuesday morning when a top aide showed him a tweet from Mr. Trump announcing the change, according to a senior State Department official.” In a statement, the State Department spokesperson Steve Goldstein, who was also reportedly fired, said Tillerson “did not speak to the President and is unaware of the reason, but he is grateful for the opportunity to serve, and still believes strongly that public service is a noble calling.” He also indicated that he “had every intention of staying.”

Tillerson is just one of the dozens of senior officials who have left or been fired from the White House. Former communications director Anthony Scaramucci—who lasted just 10 days in his role—left in July, followed by former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon. More recently, Hope Hicks resigned from her role as White House communications director.
