President Donald Trump recently praised the White House on Twitter and denied reports that he called the presidential residence “a real dump” in an interview with Golf Magazine. The 7,424-word report, which is set to appear in next week’s edition of Sports Illustrated, was described as “totally untrue” by Trump.
Trump denied that he ever said the “White House is a real dump,” which he reportedly stated while visiting his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey—a place that he has frequently visited since becoming president. “I love the White House, one of the most beautiful buildings (homes) I have ever seen,” Trump tweeted Wednesday evening. “But Fake News said I called it a dump – TOTALLY UNTRUE.”

Reporter Alan Shipnuck defended the report and explained in a podcast that at least eight members and staffers at the club heard Trump call the White House a “dump.” After White House spokeswoman Hope Hicks demanded a retraction, Shipnuck elaborated on the quote and revealed how it came to be:
It’s not a lie. The president said this in front of eight or nine members and staffers at [Trump] Bedminster. It was his first visit to the club after he had been residing in the White House. It was a moment of candor. Someone who was a part of that conversation relayed it to me. I found this person to be an extremely credible source on any number of topics.
The week of the U.S. Women’s Open [in July], I heard the same story told by two or three different other sources. This is certainly a moment that has already passed into legend at Trump Bedminster. It might be inconvenient for her boss and she might wish he didn’t say it, but it’s not a lie.
Trump has tweeted about “fake news” more than 80 times since the start of the year. He previously called Golf Magazine “great” after receiving positive reviews of his courses.
.@GolfMagazine is great, thanks!
