President Donald Trump unleashed a Twitter firestorm Friday morning when he suggested canceling all future White House press briefings and warned former FBI Director James Comey against press leaks.

In a series of early-morning tweets, Trump blasted the “fake media” amid the fallout from Comey’s firing. Trump has tweeted about the “fake media” and “fake news” more than 50 times since the 2016 presidential election.

Additionally, he suggested that future press briefings could be canceled and replaced with written responses to ensure “perfect accuracy” after contradicting versions of the firing were spread. He tweeted, “As a very active President with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with perfect accuracy!” Adding, “Maybe the best thing to do would be to cancel all future ‘press briefings’ and hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy???”

According to the White House Historical Association, “Press conferences are an important source for historical researchers because they lead to media interpretations of the chief executive, in addition to the words uttered by the president himself, which feed our understanding of his role in history. Press briefings also promote transparency between the government and the American people.

Trump also warned Comey against leaking to the press. “James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press,” he wrote. Norm Eisen, former Obama White Hosue ethics czar, stated that the tweet could actually be a crime in the form of witness intimidation by “demanding loyalty.” It is unclear, according to the Washington Post, whether tapes of Trump’s private conversations with Comey actually exist.

Comey was fired earlier this week amid his investigation into Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election outcome. He had allegedly asked for more resources for the investigation prior to his firing, according to a report.
