Have you ever wished that the classic deep-fried food that you get at state fairs could be boxed up and taken home to enjoy year round? Well, Hostess has made that wish come true, at least for one product.
Deep-fried Twinkies are now available at Walmart. According to CNN, the deep-fried Twinkies will come in their original golden flavor, as well as chocolate. According to the article, Walmart plans on rolling out the new Twinkies nationwide by tomorrow. Hostess also unveiled new Key Lime Slime Twinkies last month to celebrate the release of “Ghostbusters.” And yes, the green filling actually looks like slime.
According to Walmart’s blog, in addition to deep-fried Twinkies being sold at state fairs and food trucks, people have actually been making them for years. “It’s one of the most popular recipes in an official Twinkie cookbook,” John Pearson, senior buyer of frozen foods at Walmart U.S., writes. The new Twinkies will hit the freezer aisle of more than 4,000 Walmart stores. They are covered in a “funnel cake-like batter” and ready-to-heat.
Pearson also describes how, when meeting with Hostess, they discussed how the Twinkies could fit into consumer trends of wanting healthy, yet overindulgent snacks, “those ‘sometimes’ foods that are so good they’re worth the calories.” Adding, “I talked about the way this product appeals to everyone: from the Boomers who have fond memories of Twinkies as children, to millennials craving a cool midnight snack.”
So are the new Twinkies a winner on social media?
