In the first round of team dances this season, Team Past goes head-to-head with Team Future. Team Past is composed of James Hinchcliffe and Sharna Burgess, Calvin Johnson Jr. and Lindsay Arnold, Ryan Lochte and Cheryl Burke, Maureen McCormick and Artem Chigventsev, while Team Future includes Marilu Henner and Derek Hough, Laurie Hernandez and Val Chmerkovskiy, Terra Jole and Sasha Farber, and Jana Kramer and Gleb Savchenko.

Whichever team wins will get extra points added to their total for the night.

Team Past is up first, led by James Hinchcliffe, dancing a Scottish-themed Viennese waltz. After a stressful week of rehearsals, Len Goodman says they came together “terrifically.” He calls it “a proper team dance” and Julianne Hough agrees. Bruno Tonioli calls it a dream and praised how in sync they were with each other. Carrie Ann Inaba says it was like an all-professional team dancing. They score a 38.

Team Future, led by Laurie Hernandez, dance a freestyle with a tango/paso doble feel that perfectly incorporates their theme. Their week of rehearsals was emotional, but Julianne Hough says it was a cool concept and loved their approach. She says she loved the individual performances but there were moments of the couples being out of sync. Bruno Tonioli, sci-fi freak, says the synchronization was not totally there, but liked the concept, as did Carrie Ann Inaba. Len Goodman appreciated that the skill was there and says there was “great imagination.” They score a 35.

It’s “Eras Night” and the dance floor is ready for a serious dose of nostalgia. The remaining couples will perform dance routines inspired by various decades to dance styles such as the Charleston, foxtrot and jitterbug. Head judge Len Goodman returns to the judging panel this evening. The first set of team dances also occurs tonight, with Team Past (James, Calvin, Ryan, Maureen) going head-to-head against Team Future (Marilu, Laurie, Terra, Jana). Who will come out on top? One couple will be eliminated at the end of tonight’s episode, leaving seven couples who will be preparing spooky performances for Halloween Week next Monday.

Now in its 23rd season, “Dancing with the Stars” is hosted by Tom Bergeron and sports broadcaster Erin Andrews. The judging panel is composed of ballroom experts Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba, Julianne Hough and Bruno Tonioli. Their scores, along with America’s votes, determine who gets to stay and who is sent home each week as couples vie for the coveted Mirrorball trophy.

This season’s star-studded line-up includes Olympic gymnast Laurie Hernandez with Val Chmerkovskiy, actress Marilu Henner with Derek Hough, Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte with Cheryl Burke, former NFL wide receiver Calvin Johnson Jr. with Lindsay Arnold, actress Maureen McCormick with Artem Chigvintsev, reality TV star Terra Jolé with Sasha Farber, country singer Jana Kramer with Gleb Savchenko, and IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe with Sharna Burgess. Jake T. Austin, Rick Perry, Vanilla Ice, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds and Amber Rose have since been eliminated from the competition.

“Dancing with the Stars” airs every Monday night starting at 8 p.m. on ABC.
