Laurie Hernandez and Val Chmerkovskiy go head to head with Calvin Johnson Jr. and Lindsay Arnold, dancing a jive to “The Purple People Eater.”

Julianne Hough calls their strategy smart, but says Calvin messed up a little. Bruno Tonioli calls it “David vs. Goliath,” adding that one had a slight edge over the other. Carrie Ann Inaba loves both routines, but says one was definitely better than the other. The judges choose Laurie and Val, while America choose them as well at 63 percent, adding three points to their score.

The Halloween spirit takes over the dance floor tonight as part of “Halloween Night.” Couples will dance scary and spooky-themed dances to a style that they have yet to dance. Whoever tops the leaderboard tonight will be granted immunity and addition points for the evening, while the six remaining couples will engage in a dance-off. The dance-off styles will include a salsa, cha cha or jive. Three couples from the dance off will receive additional points to their judges’ scores. One couple will be eliminated, leaving six couples left as the competition approaches the semifinals.

The judging panel is composed of ballroom experts Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba, Julianne Hough and Bruno Tonioli. Their scores, along with America’s votes, determine who gets to stay and who is sent home each week as couples vie for the coveted Mirrorball trophy.

This season’s star-studded line-up includes Olympic gymnast Laurie Hernandez with Val Chmerkovskiy, actress Marilu Henner with Derek Hough, Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte with Cheryl Burke, former NFL wide receiver Calvin Johnson Jr. with Lindsay Arnold, reality TV star Terra Jolé with Sasha Farber, country singer Jana Kramer with Gleb Savchenko, and IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe with Sharna Burgess. Jake T. Austin, Rick Perry, Vanilla Ice, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, Amber Rose and Maureen McCormick have since been eliminated from the competition.
