Taking home the honor of Best Lead Actress in a Musical is Cynthia Erivo for “The Color Purple.”

Nominees included:

  • Carmen Cusack for “Bright Star”
  • Cynthia Erivo for “The Color Purple” (winner)
  • Jessie Mueller for “Waitress”
  • Phillipa Soo for “Hamilton”

Though Erivo’s only Broadway credits include “The Color Purple,” she is also a part of the album “Cynthia Erivo and Oliver Tompsett Sing Scott Alan.” With her win, the Tony Awards made history, being that “all four major musical acting categories were won by actors of color,” which also included Daveed Diggs, Leslie Odom Jr. and Renee Elise Goldsberry.

Previous winners in this category have included Sutton Foster for “Anything Goes,” Idina Menzel for “Wicked” and Bebe Neuwirth for “Chicago.”
