This week, Tilman Fertitta meets with Sean and Tim of Smart LED Concepts.
Smart LED Concepts shines a light on endless possibilities. According to their website, their custom fixtures help improve any room’s aesthetic, energy efficiency and design by providing various lighting packages. They offer services for commercial, architectural, residential and design & value engineering, providing LED lighting for both indoor and outdoor locations. Despite success with a variety of clients, according to the episode description, the founder struggles to achieve the American Dream.
Fertitta is impressed with the technology, but is discouraged by how much more expensive LED bulbs are over traditional bulbs. After growing steadily, they leveled out in 2015 and Fertitta says he must scale if he wants to grow. He challenges them to design and implement lighting for the Police Foundation Gala in Houston.
The guests at the event like the lighting, however, Fertitta adds an extra layer to the challenge when one of his electricians tests whether they really are more efficient. They pass the test with “flying LED colors,” as Fertitta puts it, saving approximately 90 percent on power at the event. He is still concerned about their creativity and scalability, though, so encourages them to push their limits.
The entire building at the Chart House is illuminated with blue, green, red and pink lights. Fertitta is impressed with the outside but quickly loses interest once he steps inside. He says there are too many colors, especially with the combination of blue and green clashed with orange and white, comparing it to a hallucination or Martians and deeming it a failure. They change the color temperature immediately, which greatly improves the atmosphere.

Before meeting in the boardroom, he challenges them to come up with a conceptual lighting plan and have it ready to present. In the boardroom, Fertitta likes their plan, but doesn’t like their numbers. The full package would cost $105,000 but would ultimately save more money with the LED lights. He accepts.

According to CNBC, the reality television show “introduces promising companies across the country to one of America’s most successful businessmen: billionaire hospitality mogul Tilman Fertitta, Chairman, CEO, and sole shareholder of Landry’s, Inc.” Featured entrepreneurs present their small business to Fertitta in the hopes that he will place a large purchase order. But before they make their pitch, they must prove to the hospitality mogul that their product is worth it through challenges and customer feedback.
