Alex Winter has let some radical details on Bill & Ted 3 slip. Winter, better known as Bill S. Preston Esq. to his cult following, will return with Keanu Reeves, Ted ‘Theodore’ Logan, as 40 year old men in the new installment.
“Bill and Ted will be 40-something and it’s all about Bill and Ted grown up, or not grown up,” says Winter, in a discussion with Yahoo Movies. He also went on to say it’s really sweet and really funny, which is what long time fans are hoping for.
“But it’s a Bill & Ted movie, that’s what it is. It’s for the fans of Bill & Ted. It fits very neatly in the series.” he says about the third film.
It’s been over twenty years since a new movie, and hearing Bill say that is reassuring, considering him and Reeves were much younger in the last two. Winter also states that it’s not going to feel like a reboot, which is a common theme for pictures today.
On the plot details, he says, “The conceit is really funny: what if you’re middle-aged, haven’t really grown up and you’re supposed to have saved the world and maybe, just maybe, you kinda haven’t? There’s many versions of ourselves in this movie.”
The actor claims Bill & Ted 3 will answer an old question, what happened to the dudely duo twenty years down the line?
He goes on to say, “They’re supposed to have done all this stuff, they weren’t the brightest bulbs on the tree, what happened 20 years later? To answer that question in a comedic way felt rich with possibility.”
We will have to wait a while to see Bill & Ted as forty year old men, since it’s doubtful that it’s going into production anytime soon. Winter says the fact that the word getting out on the film happening is going against them, and now fans are expecting it sooner than later, when really there’s not much on the table for it.
Problems for Bill & Ted 3’s production fate include the film’s rights, which were once owned by the now defunct Orion Pictures. Another problem is the funding to revive a twenty three year old franchise, that might hold little interest to today’s market. However in an age of crowd funding, there’s hope that we may see it become a reality.
Bill & Ted 3 is likely to happen, but now it’s a question of when we’ll see the duo as bodacious forty year old dudes.
