Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson baffled social media users Monday afternoon when he seemed to suggest in a speech to his staff that slaves were “immigrants” who worked “even harder for less” in the United States. Carson’s comments are just the latest in a series of troubling missteps that President Donald Trump’s administration has made in recent months.

Referring to America as “a land of dream and opportunity” in his speech Monday afternoon, Carson said:

“There were other immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less. But they too had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great grandsons, great granddaughters might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land.”

In his speech, Carson also discussed the human brain and how his leadership approach will have an emphasis on “fairness,” however, he failed to address key concerns that have come up since his HUD secretary nomination.

The Trump administration was also criticized last month for their failed attempts at celebrating Black History Month.
