Steve Bannon’s time as White House chief strategist has officially come to an end. The White House confirmed on Friday that Bannon had been removed from his role in the latest White House shakeup.

The New York Times reports that Bannon, who was a key player throughout President Donald Trump’s election, would be leaving his post on Friday. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement, “White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and Steve Bannon have mutually agreed today would be Steve’s last day. We are grateful for his service and wish him the best.” CNN reports that “while Bannon was given the option to resign, he was ultimately forced out.”

Vanity Fair reporter Gabriel Sherman tweeted that Bannon is “expected to return to Breitbart” amid his departure from the White House. Bannon formerly served as executive chair for the right-wing news website that has been criticized for promoting sexist, racist and xenophobic views. The controversial figure, who was ousted from his National Security Council post in April, has been labeled a white supremacist by critics.

Earlier this week, the New York Times reported that it was a possibility Bannon would be out of a job by the end of the week. Trump was reportedly considering firing Bannon for months and finally distanced himself from the now-former chief strategist after the deadly white nationalist rally in Charlottesville. In a news conference on Tuesday, Trump said of Bannon, “He’s a good man. He is not a racist, I can tell you that. He’s a good person. He actually gets a very unfair press in that regard.”

Bannon is just one of many high-profile exits from the Trump White House. Others who have been fired or resigned include former FBI director James Comey, former White House press secretary Sean Spicer and former communications director Anthony Scaramucci—who lasted just 10 days in his role.
