Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Flipboard 2 Now there’s a loaded question. Sure, I could tell you that SEO stands for search engine optimization. I could go on to describe the multiple processes you need to go through in order to optimize your site for search. But is that really what you want to know? Or, is your real question “How can I use SEO to make more money?” That is what makes SEO so valuable. SEO makes your website more visible within the search engines. As your website becomes more visible, it attracts more visitors; more visitors means more opportunities for you to make a sale and hence more cash. So what do I need to know about SEO? The best piece of advice I can give you about marketing your business online–and this includes SEO–is that quality trumps quantity. In the past year or so Google has announced two major changes to the way their search engine works (of course, Google is not the only search engine out there, but they are top dog with over 65% of US marketshare, so when they speak, it pays to listen). These updates were dubbed Panda and Penguin. Both were designed to devalue SEO tactics that deliver low quality content and benefit websites that offer real insights and useful information. What does that mean for you? That means paying a little money for a lot of anything (articles, links, likes, etc.) isn’t going to get you what you are looking for–more business. Instead, investing in your website and in content that your customers care about and enjoy is what is going to move your website up in the rankings, improve your reputation with consumers, attract more customers to you, and grow your business. What do I need to do? If you really want to use SEO to make more money, partner with a company that will take a wholistic approach to marketing your business online (and offline, as well). Why? Because SEO is a process. There are some elements that can be put into practice right away, but you may not see real results for several weeks or even months. In the meantime, what else is your marketer doing to attract visitors to your website? Furthermore, SEO only gets visitors to your website. Once they have arrived what is your marketing partner doing to convert those visitors into customers? It takes beautiful, functional web design and engaging, carefully crafted content to sell your products and services. SEO alone won’t make you a dime. Wouldn’t it be cheaper to do my own SEO? That depends. Do you have extra time on your hands that wouldn’t be better spent working with your existing customers or perhaps taking a day off rather than studying the ins-and-outs of SEO? If so, feel fee to get started with my article “How And Where To Use SEO Keywords On Your Website.” But SEO is complicated and not something that is mastered quickly.
