Matt Cutts, former head of web spam at Google, has officially resigned from the company. He took a leave of absence in 2014, spending some of that time working with the US Digital Service. Now, he reports he had officially resigned from Google on December 31, 2016 to stay on at the USDS as director of engineering. Tomorrow, on January 20th, Cutts will take on the role of acting administrator for the USDS.
“The work that the USDS does is critical to the American people, and I’m honored to continue that tradition,” Cutts says in a statement released on his blog. He goes on to list many of the achievements the USDS has had and why he looks forward to the challenges ahead as administrator.

Matt Cutts was practically a celebrity in the SEO world. At least, as close to one as we had for the time he worked there. Whether fielding questions on Twitter or posting informative videos on YouTube, his contributions to search engine optimization were always frequent and always appreciated. (Okay, maybe not always appreciated! But important nonetheless.)
