This should have been yesterday’s Monday tip but I was away at a friend’s wedding over the weekend so I had to miss out on yesterday’s post!
There are tips and tricks in Internet Marketing that we all learn and then often forget, misunderstand or ignore. Longtail keywords seems to be one such thing.
Many people think that they are using good longtail keywords but they then find that they aren’t getting traffic for them and they aren’t ranking for them, but they don’t understand the reason.
People often like to give a set formula for picking keywords (I’ve done it myself in the past) something like: over 10,000 searches per month and less than 1000 competing pages. So you go and find keywords that fit into this set formula and sometimes you rank and sometimes you don’t .
The big problem with this is that a lot of the searches every month are done by internet marketers like you and me. In researching this blog post I did 5 searches for “how to get a six pack” Every marketer building a blog on the same topic has also probably done a search for the same keyword.
So of the 33,000 searches each month how many are genuine people researching how to get six pack abs and how many are people like you and me?
Thats not the only problem..ohhh no.
How many people searching for “how to get six pack abs” do you think are going to spend money on getting 6 pack abs? If they are searching for that term there is a good chance that they want free information, so unless you are giving a way a free book on tips to get 6 pack abs then you are wasting time targetting them.
That’s the problem covered now whats the solution?
As I pointed out in last weeks post about affiliate marketing you actually know the answer yourself. When you search online for information about what to buy what search terms do you use?
Review Of…
Equipment that will…
Best Program to..
etc..etc.
The longtail keyword ”Best program For Abs” has only 590 searches a month but most of those will be buyers (bet that search number increases in the next few days!!) It also only has 54 relevant results in google.
Using a keyword like that means that to get on the front page of google is relatively easy, in fact it took me less than 6 hours to get a keyword onto the front page of google last week when I was running a test, I didn’t even bother with getting any backlinks, just a few tweets and some social media. (It wasn’t even all my own content as it was a curated post.)
Why not try it for your next blog post, find a long tail keyword based on what you would use when you are buying or researching buying online with less than 800 searches a month then do the following:
Create a 400 word post with the keyword as the title
Add a relevant graphic
Add the keyword to the first sentence and the last sentence at a minimum, no need to have more than about 0.60% keyword density
Tweet the post and add it to any social accounts you have such as Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, etc.
If you have a Typepad account or a WordPress.com add an excerpt with a link back to the original article (these will be ranked in google in under 10 minutes!)
Thats it … that’s all you need to do to start with.
You may well think that 500 searches a month isn’t enough to make you money but believe me 10 posts ranking on the front page of google is way better than 1 high search phrase ranking down on page 14 or 15.. consider what will give you more authority in the long run?
So give it a go, I am more than happy for you to post your results below.
