Packaging serves not only a functional role but also a promotional one. It is used to keep the product safe from damage and as a tool for advertisement. In an attempt to make it both protective and attractive, companies spend tons of money on packaging materials. Some of the things that you choose to use may not actually be necessary. Here are a few ways in which you can save costs on packaging:

  • Determine what is important to you

When it comes to packaging, there are a variety of factors that you need to consider. Structural strength, safety, aesthetic features, ease of handling, the cost of materials and more. Identify what exactly you are looking for and then narrow down on the type of packaging you want.

  • Save on size and quantity

Not all products require multiple layers of packaging. Choose the packaging based on the type of product and the conditions of transport & handling. Lesser layers of packaging will mean smaller boxes. Procurement, handling, and transport of cartons and tins of smaller sizes are a lot easier than larger ones.

Additionally, economize on the other aspects of packaging– threads, tape, ribbons, Styrofoam packing, plastic bubble wrap, and so on. Use only what is necessary and only when needed.

  • Use lightweight packaging material

Materials such as plastic bubble wraps, foldable cardboard cartons, plastic air pillows, Styrofoam sheets, and peanuts are all lightweight, easily available, and reusable. This makes these materials ideal for small and medium-sized businesses.

  • Buy packaging in small batches

While buying cartons and other packaging materials, purchase only as needed. Don’t invest in large quantities of packing material. As the design of your product changes and the way you do operations evolves, your packaging requirements will also change.

Additionally, always rent packaging if you can. If you have small batches of products, renting boxes and tin cans will be economical.

  • Invest in research and testing

Buy a test batch before you purchase for your entire stock of products. This test batch can be used to test the effectiveness of the packaging under stimulated conditions. Experiment on the packing to see if it can withstand the stress of handling and transport. It may mean making higher investments initially, but in the long run, it will save you from having to choose a new supplier or new packaging materials.

  • Choose Eco-friendly materials

Recycled paper, cardboard, and biodegradable plastics are environmentally friendly, lightweight, and cost-effective. Choosing these will help you make great savings.

Savings v/s quality

This is the age-old question when it comes to packaging. Should companies compromise on quality in favor of savings? The answer is no. From plastics to corrugated tin, there are many types of versatile packaging material available. Many of these materials are high in quality and low in cost. By doing a bit of research, companies can find packaging materials that will protect the product from damage, look good, and save much needed financial resources.
