One of the biggest goals for brands, businesses, marketers and bloggers is trying to grow their number of Pinterest followers and get more repins.
Pinterest users typically use the search engine within Pinterest to type in keywords when looking for things they want to create, do, plan and so forth.
With the fall season starting next week it’s time to get serious with fall or autumn related keywords because women are plan with the most popular trends on Pinterest in mind.
They plan ahead! For instance, there are over 176 million Halloween Pins and more than 45 million Halloween boards on Pinterest right now. Pinterest users begin looking for Halloween topics as early as August. This matches findings from RJ metrics, which also show that women start pinning holiday themes in August!
In addition; 67% go on Pinterest to keep up with the latest trends. With that kind of massive traffic; enterprises, bloggers, marketers and business owners would profit if they could find ways to leverage seasonal and trending boards in their pursuit of more followers.
Halloween is so popular that the total amount that people spent on Halloween in 2013 was $6.9 billion! WOW! Did you know that?
To ensure your pins are discovered on Pinterest’s search engine and Guided Search tool, you need to be strategic about using keywords. Additionally, these keywords must be included in specific areas to boost your chances of being found. They are:
- board titles
- board descriptions
- pin descriptions
Board Title Names
The key to a successful Pinterest board title is not trying to be too clever. Save your creativity for the images themselves. For example: if you have a board of cheesecake recipes, don’t name it “My Cheesy Creations.” Ask yourself, is someone going to type in the words cheesy creations into the search tool when looking cheesecake recipes? Most likely not.
Remember that board names are indexed by Google too so you want to keep the board names obvious and simple. In this case “Cheesecake Recipes” would do fine.
Board Description
You have ample space here, so carefully select several keywords and use them throughout your board description several times each to increase your Pinterest SEO.
Think through what Pinterest users expect to find on your board and why pinners should follow your board. Spell it out clearly, and then add a call to action.
Pin Descriptions
One of the biggest mistakes I see being made over and over is how Pinterest users fail to craft eye grabbing, attention sucking pin descriptions.
I often just see hashtags, or one liners, or even just one word. I think it is because it is so much for fun to pin while creating pin descriptions feels more like work! Guess what? It is!
Pinterest pin descriptions are more important than ever before. Powered by user supplied captions and comments, Pinterest categorizes your pins based on your pin descriptions. One of the most powerful & important ways to improve your search results is to sharpen your pin descriptions.
The length of a pin description on an Android smart phone device cuts off at around 125 characters depending on the width of the letters. Over 75% of Pinterest users use their mobile device so you want to make sure that your most vital information and keywords are in your first 125 characters.

Pinterest Expert Actionable Tip:
- Make sure your Halloween and Fall theme boards are positioned in the top row of your Pinterest page. Please move your summer boards down. :)
- If you don’t have the time or resources to create the top trending boards I recommend that you join a group board with a thousand or more followers. Repinning the most popular themes will still give you exposure to new followers.
