Now that Facebook has acquired Instagram, the pressure is on other high-profile tech and social media companies to acquire their own ‘cool’ companies. And that means that interest is turning to Pinterest. Although it’s not as big as Instagram (in terms of user base), the photo-sharing site does have a strong community and potential for a revenue model. And, this hasn’t escaped the attention of Google’s top M&A dog.
According to Business Insider, David Lawee of Google is taking a look at Pinterest. He tells Business Insider, ‘If you look at what we’re rooted in, it’s kind of obvious what we’re looking for.’ He goes on to discuss the importance of ‘discovery of video,’ which is something with which Pinterest could certainly help. Lawee also goes a step further and says, ‘Pinterest is a phenomenon that’s extraordinary.’
Of course, Business Insider is suggesting an acquisition price of around $2 bn, simply because Google can afford it and needs to make a move in the social space, but I still can’t get my head there.
