Is it Time to Say Good-bye to the Traditional Website?

    timthumb.php

Thankfully, since its origins as a convenient way for the US military to share information, the internet has moved on.

Whilst in the good old days of web 1.0 we were used to static websites – and having to search them and the content they contained out for ourselves – times have changed, and the world of web 2.0 saw the web become social and start distributing content all over the place. And the new world of multi-screen, wearable technology and augmented looks set to change our experience even further. So where does that leave the humble website?

    The threat

There are a couple of big threats to the traditional brand website. Social media – and Facebook in particular – has got so big, and started offering so many experiences within its walled garden, that some users simply don’t bother going anywhere else. And given that it’s free to set up a page and all of the social functionality is built in, it could be a strong alternative to a bespoke website, no?

RSS is another potential website killer. Well, sort of. More and more aggregators use RSS to deliver your website content to customers in a standardised, non-branded format. Meaning that users can get the benefit of your content outside of the carefully thought out, beautifully designed environment you intended them to consume it in. Flipboard and LinkedIn Today are a couple of examples.

So let’s take a look at your options.

Both social media and RSS satisfy a hunger people have for a digital experience that is:

Interactive: These days consumers want the option of a conversation, with online experiences often made up of equal parts consumption and contribution. I can just about guarantee that if Facebook had allowed people only to consume and never post, comment or like, it would have been nothing more than a dorm room dream.

Instant: The beauty of social media is it provides instant access to the newest information. The second someone uploads a photos, shares a page or comments on your wall you know about it. The same is true for RSS readers. Consumers expect immediate satisfaction.

Accessible: It simply isn’t good enough anymore to deny users the full experience simply because they’re accessing content from a mobile device. While many new websites are embracing responsive and adaptive design principles that allow for a more enjoyable mobile experience, purpose-built social media and RSS reader apps (and third party applications like Flipboard) have been providing a great experience on smaller screens for years.

The traditional website on the other hand has been a pillar of the internet since DARPA opened up the World Wide Web to the public. A traditional website provides a business with:

A first impression: When someone googles your business or industry, chances are your website is going to be one of the first results and the quality and experience of your website can make or break how your brand is perceived (both online and off).

A flagship online product: Not only does a traditional website provide an online identity for your brand, it can also serve as a hub; hosting your content and pointing people to your engagement in other online platforms like social media.

A familiar experience: Perhaps the most important benefit provided by maintaining a traditional website is its familiarity. Like I said earlier, people expect you to have a website and while I’m all for early adopting, I have to admit I’m still a little suspicious when a brand only exists on Facebook and doesn’t have a site of its own.

So do you still need a traditional website?

Despite the threat posed by social media, blog-based website and RSS feeds, I don’t think it’s quite time to add the traditional website to the endangered species list. It’s still a cornerstone of the online experience and until some dramatic shifts in both consumer and producer behaviour occur that’s not going to change.

And, should a brand choose to eschew a traditional website in favour of a Facebook page and Twitter feed, they’d also be choosing to give up potential viewers. Despite the soaring popularity Facebook et al currently enjoy, no single social media platform will offer penetration even close to that of the aptly named world wide web.

And even though RSS offers an alternative, digestible way to consume content, RSS needs something to draw from, and without a website RSS is effectively useless.

But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider your options. In this video Kevin Kearney of New York-based design firm Hard Candy Shell makes the point that a website isn’t the only (or necessarily even the best) way to exist in the online environment anymore.

In the end, whatever the digital future brings it will be up to businesses to decide how they engage and integrate with it. For the time being, though, I think it’s safe to say the good old website is a basic, entry level necessity.

In my opinion, people want content without all the bullshit around it.

RSS Readers and services like Readability strip everything but the content, which is why they are preferable. As users we want to read the content, not be restricted to a 300px column containing the content which is surrounded by the Twitter Feed, Facebook feed, A vertical ‘Share’ bar which follows my scroll, “You might also like” and various other crap.

Like you mentioned, no website = no content. As a UI decision we need treat the content as the most important part of the page with typography design and good readability, and not stuff crap around it, then people will enjoy reading the content on your site and not in some simplified third party aggregator.

Brad Frost has recently gave a brilliant presentation on this subject.

        Hi Shannon,

Interesting points that you make. Although I would like to add that with content marketing – sometimes the feed is the bull shit :-)

        Kind Regards,

What do you mean by “traditional website”?

I don’t like websites that has many distractions. Say for example Facebook, many frowned on its very ad centered environment.

A website is like a store on the street, a sure place where people can find you. what needs to change is to make the website more dynamic but people are afraid, me included, to go too far. We don’t know if our potential clients will like a look that is so different of what they’re used to. So, we prefer to go with a Website that is more conservative or that follows the present trend but I’m anticipating a very different website model in the future.

This is great, it’s an interesting perspective that I haven’t heard before. I wonder if mobile gets too much credit? This trend analysis seems to imply that people won’t be consuming the internet from PCs for much longer. I don’t think that’s true. Dilly-dallying at work, for example, probably accounts for a pretty huge chunk of online revenue generated.

Something I haven’t put a lot of thought into, but now that you brought it up, its probably something I should put more brain power behind. While I don’t think websites are dead, that doesn’t mean we should put our heads in the sand and say it can’t happen. I agree with Marc-Andy Henry that “A website is like a store on the street, a sure place where people can find you.” For how long – that’s a good question?

Thanks for your in depth post. I would have to agree that the traditional style website is a pretty safe bet, especially for small business owners that need an online web presence. Providing responsive design is one way to have a ‘one size fits all’ website that caters to site visitors, no matter what the size of their screen/monitor.

      Keep up the good work!

Like you, I think that we’re far from seeing the death of traditional websites as we know it today. The reason? These traditional websites are the only place you can call your home base, where you have full control of what you want posted or shared. While social networks have enhanced the way we engage online, let’s not forget that they have their own rules and they can change it anytime. Who really owns what you share on these networks really..?

Still trying to find the best way to involve clients and potential clients in an interactive relationship. It’s easier for McDonalds and B-to-C sites, and corporations with entire
creative departments dedicated to “fun” websites. But does anyone have a great example of B-to-B websites that do this?

Everything’s destined to evolve so it wouldn’t surprise me if the traditional website design begins to change. Look at how Pinterest has impacted on the world wide web; it’s forced a big change. Anyway, if things did change as long as pop-up adverts disappeared with the old ways I’d be happy! They drive me insane and force my off a site immediately (take note businesses).

There was a time when it did seem like it might be feasible and beneficial to move away from traditional websites to something like Facebook pages as the anchor for an online brand. However, in practice I have to agree with what you have presented in this post and with what many of the other comments are saying.

We seem to be achieving especially good results with responsive sites, augmented by well thought out, related social media campaigns.

      Thanks for the post.

Oh, but it is time to say goodbye to the traditional website!

A website may be the cornerstone of any brand, but I’d argue that traditional is out, and the social community website is in. If you’re new to the idea, a community website has social built-in. Plug-in your social presence, add a forum, community blog and various other features that inspire your fans and followers to join the conversation, and give your brand a venue to boost owned and earned media. This content shouldn’t be sold down the river via Facebook and Twitter streams. The community website is a brand’s social home on the Web — a place where a company and its advocates can strengthen their relationships and bust through the boundaries of the one-to-many publishing model enforced by the traditional website structure. It’s not just for big brands, either. Individuals and smaller organizations with a modest following stand to gain as much or more by cultivating the relationship with their biggest advocates. And with an owned community site, you’ll still have control of your messaging and be able to reach your audience when Facebook tightens the reigns or Twitter pivots.

Facebook pages and Twitter feeds should be active supplementary components of a web presence, not the core of your marketing or branding platform.

For every moment a customer is on your Facebook page, Facebook is offering opportunities for them to be distracted by new wall posts, sidebar advertisements, and a quorum of other tedium not related to them doing business with YOU.

A Facebook page is a wonderful channel to drive interest to your core site, but make no mistake–you are never wholly in control of it; you are parking a sign in what is ultimately someone else’s tent.

Sometimes a website/web page is required for simple things – Where Are We?, Our Mission, Annual Reports, Board Members, Product Range, R&D etc. Not sure how well these requirements would be met by social media.

I am so pleased to see this piece as I don’t yet have a website but I DO have a blog and I do wonder if there’s a distinct point to have both, except that a website can house a proper shopfront and you can create a mailing list of it, which might be harder with a free blog. I’ve been sitting on the fence a while on this score.

Traditional websites are going not anywhere for a long time. There is no way to sell my products on just using social media. It may depend upon what the site is offering whether traditional websites have run their course. Google makes a ton of money on adwords from websites and if they have anything to say about it, websites are not going anywhere
