If you aren’t familiar with the name Craig Newmark… you have either been living under a rock for the past fifteen years or you do not own a computer. Craig Newmark gained considerable fame and fortune when he launched the online classifieds site Craigslist.org in 1995. Craigslist now boasts fifty million users in the United States alone and is the seventh most visited English based website on the Internet.
Needless to say… Craig’s got some pull.
Craig recently launched CraigsConnects.org which is a place for nonprofit organizations to connect and be supported by the influence of Craig and the world of Craigslist. Here is an excerpt about the site:
I’ve decided what I want to do for the next 20 years, which is to help connect and protect organizations that are doing good through a program I’m calling craigconnects.
I need your help. Together, we can make a difference.
Craig is using the site to support a few areas of interest including:
- Community Building
- Journalism Integrity
- Middle East
- Open & Accountable Government
- Service and Volunteering
- Technology for Social Good
- Veterans Issues
Why is this site important? Well… other than Craig Newmark being the founder of Craigslist… it means much more than just the notoriety of the creator. It is the building of different systems to group people together for a cause. It is also the simplicity of the message that makes this site extremely appealing. In the same way Craigslist created an easy system for people to sell and giveaway their wares… so does CraigConnects for raising money and support for nonprofits.
This isn’t a fancy technology or a new tool to help in donor fundraising… this is just a guy who wants to make a difference and has the support to do it!
“Together, we can make a difference.”
Together, we can do more and Craig Newmark has added to that movement.
