Every website owners dream is to dominate the top 10 search results with the keywords they have in mind. While some keywords are extremely tough to rank for, there are some keywords out there that really can draw the targeted traffic you need, but don’t have the competition like many main keywords do.

I wanted to give you 7 tips that worked for me and I’m sure that they will work for you as well. Getting into the top 10 results on Google take time, but you will find that if you have the patience to succeed, anything is possible!

  1. Go where there is no competition – Lets say that you have a website that focuses on lawn mowers. Sure, you can go for that huge keyword but you’re going to realize that this is going to take time. This is why you will want to target smaller keywords such as “lawn mowers for sale”, or “gas lawn mower.” Once you rank for these keywords, you can go for the main one. Try not to focus on too many.
  2. Backlinks help tremendously – No matter what anyone says, if you want to rank, you’re going to need people to link to you. I know you’ve probably heard it a million times, but if no one links to you, you’re not going anywhere. There are many ways to get links such as asking for them, writing for others, press releases, directories, and more.
  3. Keep the site fresh – Google doesn’t like a site that just sits there and does nothing. Instead of letting it go stale, you’re going to want to update it on occasions. My rule of thumb is that as long as you update your site 3-5 times a week, you should be fine. A blog is a great way to keep your content fresh.
  4. Have value in mind – Many webmasters create a website with money in mind. If you’re concentrating solely on money, rather than the user’s experience, you’re going to find that no one is going to come to the site. I don’t know how many times I’ve come across sites that are pure junk. Do you think people want to visit these sites?
  5. Network with others – Networking with other people in your industry is a great way to draw awareness to not only your brand, but your website as well. It’s also a great way to share ideas with other business owners that work in your industry. Yes, there is such thing as good competition.
  6. Be social – There’s more to the Internet than Google today. Social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Digg, and more are great ways to get your name out there. Again, you’re going to want to have great content in order for people to either follow or like your sites.
  7. Make sure your website is friendly – Make sure that your website has the right <title> tags, as well as a description. You will also want to make sure that your site has the right targeted content on your site. If you know basic HTML, you shouldn’t have a problem with this.

It takes time to rank and if you think it’s going to happen overnight, you’re in for a surprise. These tips are just a few that you can follow in order to succeed online. Anyone can do it with any type of website. Work hard, have dedication and good things shall follow!
