The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has successfully approved a trademark application filed to protect the name of the legendary professional American boxer and activist, the late Muhammad Ali. USPTO received Ali’s metaverse and NFT trademark application in late 2021.
In an October 19 blog post, Mike Kundoudis, the intellectual property attorney, confirmed that the name for the late Muhammad Ali is now officially a registered trademark under the U.S Registration No 6881575, issued on October 18.

Muhammad Ali’s Name is Now Officially Registered
According to Kondoudis, Muhammad Ali’s name is now protected within the crypto space for non-fungible tokens and virtual goods in the metaverse. The registered trademark will cover NFT-authenticated media featuring Ali, virtual clothing, footwear, headwear, sports bags, and equipment.
Muhammad Ali, also nicknamed “The Greatest,” is today regarded as one of the most significant sports figures of the 20th century. While commenting about his newly approved trademark application in a recent exclusive interview, Kondoudis remarked:
“This registration was examined and approved in less than a year, which is fairly quick by USPTO standards. We expect the same results for applications for other celebrity names. It also offers a blueprint for protecting celebrity names and brands as they transition into the metaverse.”
He added:
“We expect this trend of celebrity Web3 trademarks to continue as more celebrities come to recognize the need for brand protection in the metaverse.”
Celebrities Flood The NFT Industry
In the past several months, the United States Patent and Trademark Office has seen increased reflux of public figures and celebrities spurring to join the NFT industry. In September, famous singer and actress Miley Cyrus filed metaverse and NFT-related trademarks of her name. Cyrus anticipated launching virtual clothing, entertainment services, drinks, and currency management software.
Last month, global artist Christina Aguilera filed a trademark application for NFT and metaverse. She planned to launch NFTs + NFT-backed media, crypto collectibles, metaverse entertainment services, virtual clothing, jewelry, and beauty products.
Other notable individuals already in the NFT space include professional basket player Kevin Durant, football legend Sergio Kun Aguero, professional football star Cristiano Ronaldo, famous singer, and songwriter Madonna, former professional boxer Mike Tyson, and pop singer Snoop Doggy, among others.
