EPL to launch nfts-on-sorare

The English professional football league, Premier League, has received criticism from some disgruntled supporters and a few sports-related associations after signing its multi-year agreement with fantasy gaming platform Sorare.

EPL And Sorare Integration

UK Premier League revealed signing a multi-year partnership deal with fantasy soccer gaming firm platform, Sorare yesterday. The new partnership deal, which will last for four years, was estimated at £30 million.

Launched in 2021, Sorare is fantasy sports gaming platform allowing gamers to buy, sell and manage virtual teams using non-fungible token playing cards as avatars. The NFT game allows players to select the playing card of their favorite player.

Under the new partnership, the Premier League and Sorare anticipate launching football-themed non-fungible token playing cards showcasing top scorer players. The NFT collection will feature a fixed edition of 1,111 football-themed NFTs.

EPL Faces Criticism Hours After Joining Sorare

The Football Supporters Association has criticized the English Premier League for integrating the gaming platform Sorare. While speaking shortly after the news in an interview with City A.M, the Football Supporters Association spokesperson remarked:

“Crypto assets are currently under-regulated and lack protection for the consumer buying them. Clubs, leagues and players promoting such schemes have frequently not undertaken the necessary due diligence, putting their fans at financial risk.”

According to the spokesperson, the Football Supporters Association will continue to work closely with the government regulatory agencies, parliament and other interested parties to deliver greater protections for football supporters.

In the meantime, although the English Premier League has not directly responded to the criticism, sources from the league reportedly responded that the industry regulation issue was a matter for the government.

In a past interview, Richards Masters, the Chief Executive Officer of the English Premier League, noted that the way supporters follow their favorite teams and players is rapidly evolving, and the Premier League is always looking for ways to engage with fans.
