Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Flipboard 0 So you started a LinkedIn profile with 0 connections and you’re looking to build your connections by joining groups. This sounds great, but some groups will require you to submit a request for consideration and honestly, whenever I see someone with no connections, I automatically consider them a spammer. Let’s avoid that perception, shall we? Finish your profile. Get all the necessary information on it.Your headline is a summary of what you do, your expertise. Don’t add the company you work for and your title in your headline. Sure, that’s great if you’re promoting your company, but most people like to know how you — not your company — can be of service to them. If they want to learn more about your company they’d be looking at their LinkedIn Company Page. Connect with those you know. Yes, you want to expand your network by connecting with new folks — don’t we all? The best way to do this is to connect with your colleagues, college friends, and just about anyone who would have something nice to say about you. Similar to the references you’d add on your resume, you want to start by connecting with people who would recommend your services/expertise. This can also help expand your network by asking someone you know to introduce them to one of your connections. Join relevant groups. Being a part of an online community is key to your success on LinkedIn. With groups, you’re able to share your thoughts and ask questions on specific topics. Doing a quick search on LinkedIn for industry topics is a great way to start. I suggest scoping out 5 and engaging with them on weekly basis, Monday through Friday. Build meaningful connections that last. Once you’ve been active in the LinkedIn groups, you’ll notice an increase in connections. There is a price you pay: you’ll need to keep them interested and have them remember who you are. You can do this by sending them a friendly note to see how they’re doing.
