As January always feels like a flat month after the excitement of Christmas and the New Year, perhaps your thoughts have turned to thinking about a new career or a fresh job opportunity to add some spark into your working life. You might want to let people know on LinkedIn that you are looking, but are concerned that your current employer might find out.

Well towards the end of last year LinkedIn introduced Open Candidates, a facility on LinkedIn where you can privately let recruiters know that you are on the market for a new job. This facility will hide the Open Candidates signal from recruiters at your company or affiliated company recruiters so you can privately indicate to recruiters on LinkedIn without worrying about your current employer.

First click on jobs:

Open candidates 1

Then click on Preferences:

Open candidates 2

You then get the option to let recruiters know you’re open by sliding the off button to on, see below:

Open candidates 3

Next add some additional information about yourself, such as the type of role you are interested in, when you are available to start etc.

Open candidates 4

Then fill in another form to be more specific about your requirements such as the location of where you are looking to work, the size of the company you would consider working for etc.

Open candidates 5

You can then allow job posters to see your full profile when you click apply on jobs that take you off LinkedIn to finish the application, you just need to slide the Off button to On on the “Share your profile when you click apply” section.

Before you complete the above procedure though you might want to check that your profile is as good as it can be. Read my blog here to find out the bare essentials for a successful profile on LinkedIn. You can also take our free profile test to see how well your profile scores.
