Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Flipboard 0 The old adage is true, “You’re only as strong as your weakest link.” So how do you do to fix the broken link in your organization? Do you terminate them? Do you retrain them? Do you give them 90 days or less to get their act together? The answer to all three questions is “yes.” How is that possible? It’s simple. You see, before you can take any course of action to fix the link, you’ll need to assess the situation. Then you can decide the best course of action to pursue. Here’s w how you assess the situation: Sit down with the broken link and ask them one question: “How do you think you’re performing?” Then wait for their response. You’ll end up with some version of one of the three responses below: Response #1: “I am doing the best that I can daily and I am focused on getting better.” Course of Action: You’ll need to give them 90 days to get things going in the right direction. You’ll sit down with them weekly to assess their performance and if they are really committed to the process their performance will improve before 90 days. Sometimes team members just need a little extra motivation. Response #2: “I know that I am not meeting performance goals and I am having problems with certain aspects of my daily job functions.” Course of Action: You retrain them. You let them know that after retraining they will be assessed every 30 days for a 90-day cycle. At the end of the 90-day assessment if their performance has not improved they will no longer work for the organization. Response #3: “I am slice bread and this company needs me.” Course of Action: Start the termination process immediately. They are not walking in reality and no amount of re-training coaching or developing is going to fix them. Employee’s that suck and honestly believe that they are performing well are harmful to themselves and most definitely to your organization. As a result they need to go immediately. After reading this, your organization will fall into one of two groups. The first group has existing SOP’s and training programs to fix the broken link. Kudos to you and good luck with the process! The second group however either has lackluster SOP’s or non-existing SOP’s which compounds your broken link issue.
