They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and while this might be in some ways true, there are some basic principals of what us human beings find attractive. Whether it’s a flower, person, painting, or otherwise, beautiful things generally contain the same set of characteristics that are inherently beautiful.
At the heart of beauty is simple symmetry. Science has proven that symmetry is attractive to the human eye and catches our attention more quickly than asymmetrical things. A common example is the symmetry of the face; length vs width, eye distance and nose length are all pieces that work together to create a face that we find beautiful.
Identifying and processing colors within the human brain is intricate and each color produces a certain subconscious reaction. Bright reds catch our attention the most, making that the reason stop signs and other alerts are red. Being the most emotional color to humans, the mood changes dramatically when lightened or darkened ranging from fear, to passion, to anger.
Shapes also have an in with our emotions and perceptions. The equal sides of a square mean logic, order and security, while a triangle is deeper to us, representing science and religion.
