Everyone has their competitive edge. But a new infographic from TAMBA, a social media marketing agency in the UK, reveals new information about who is getting competitive – and how they’re doing it. So, before you hit the drawing boards for your next social media contest, take a step back and look at the big picture. A few things to consider:
- What are my goals in having a contest?
- What’s the right platform for my contest?
- Who do I want to reach?
TAMBA’s infographic isn’t just limited to social media contests, but takes in a full marketing spectrum, including print, direct mail, phone, and more. Here’s a quick summary of the report’s findings. (Or, jump down to the infographic below.)
What You Should Know Before You Create a Social Media Contest
- Nearly 78% of competition participants are between the ages of 21 and 49, with the highest concentration in 30 – 39 year olds.
- TAMBA has debunked the myth that prizewinners are always bloggers. Just 5% of all participants have a blog.
- Nearly 48% of participants are full-time employees. One in three participants is unemployed.
- Social media channels are the most popular places to enter contests – leading the way, ever so slightly, in front of “company website.”
- Facebook and Twitter are the two most popular social media channels (by a landslide) for entering a competition. Pinterest is a distant third.
The Bottom Line Facts on Social Media Contests
- “84.5% of people who enter competitions still share content from a brand on social media after the promotion ends.”
- “Competitions do influence purchasing decisions for 3 in 4 participants.”
- “Almost 3 out of 4 people are more likely to recommend a brand that offers competitions and giveaways.”
Is a Social Media Contest Right for Your Brand?
Here’s a better question: Is a contest – on any platform – right for your brand? The sign of good marketing is meeting goals and achieving results; method is secondary. So, before you create a social media contest for your brand, spend some time with these demographic findings. But, more importantly, think about the end-goal you want to achieve.
