Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Flipboard 0 Can you imagine if the president was not protected by the secret service? In early years there was little concern for the safety of the President of the United States. The first police presence in Washington was established in 1805. Threat letters were not taken seriously back then, and presidents did not have protective escorts. It sounds crazy, but Andrew Jackson endorsed his hate mail and sent them for publication in the Washington Globe. In 1865, the secret service was formed, but it didn’t focus on security. It was created solely to seek out counterfeit currency. Even after Abraham Lincoln and James Garfield were assassinated, presidential security still remained a relative non-issue. It was only after William McKinley was shot in 1901, in New York, that the secret service stepped up their game, and expanded to systematic, continuous presidential protection. In 1908, the secret service began protecting the president-elect as well. Today, the secret service goes far beyond just protecting the president. They offer protection to the vice-president, presidential candidates, and former presidents, immediate family members, visiting heads of foreign governments, and many other individuals and events.
