Michael Jordan, arguably the best basketball player of all time, turned 50 on Sunday. To celebrate the legacy of this legend, we thought it would be a great idea to take a look at some interesting facts about this six-time NBA champion with the Chicago Bulls.

Did you know that Jordan didn’t make the varsity team as a sophomore at Laney High School in Wilmington, NC? Afterward, he said, “It was embarrassing not making that team.” The basketball icon had to wear a #12 jersey once after an arena employee stole his uniform during the 1990-1991 season. While Michael Jordan may seem to possess superhuman powers on the court, he’s just a human off the court. He has cried in public and felt incredible pain after he lost his father to an act of violence at the end of the 1992-1993 season.

You may also be surprised to learn that Jordan was very superstitious—he actually wore his University of North Carolina shorts under his uniform in every game since he thought it brought him luck. You may be equally surprised to learn that there was an orchestrated effort by NBA all stars to avoid passing Jordan the ball during the all star game in his rookie year. The best basketball player of all time even starred in a cartoon movie playing himself—the 1996 movie Space Jam.
