Intelligence absolutely is the first quality employers look for in prospective job candidates. After all, a full 76 percent of the productivity and contribution of an employee is determined by his or her level of intelligence. Top employers ask tough, strange questions to measure the critical thinking abilities of job candidates. Amazon, for example, is known to ask the following question: “Jeff Bezos walks into your office and says you have a million dollars to launch your best entrepreneurial idea. What is it?” This question is really trying to uncover how well the job candidate can plan.
Forrester Research may ask its job candidates the following question: “If you were to get rid of one state in the US, which would it be and why?” You may wonder what in the heck is the purpose of such a question—be sure not to answer the job interviewer’s home state! The real question veiled behind this is, “Can you set priorities?”
Emotional intelligence matters as well—71 percent of employers said they value intelligence more than IQ. If you ever have a job interview with Facebook, be prepared for this possible question: “It’s 6 P.M. and your work day is over; what happened during the day that made it awesome?”
