Nostalgia is probably one of the most underrated emotions in the emotional spectrum, especially when it comes to social media. When users are scanning through hundreds and thousands of posts a day it becomes seemingly impossible to stand out. Luckily, it’s not impossible and there are several things you can do to get ahead of the competition.

1. Focus on visual media – Even if the goal is to get someone to read an article, the visual you use will be the thing that grabs the reader’s attention. Use visual elements that will trigger nostalgic feelings for your target audience. Be conscious about what’s relevant to the age group you’re after. For example: an Atari reference might not do well for an audience of millennials.

2. Use visual metaphors – Just because your content is serious doesn’t mean that everything you do to promote it has to be equally serious. For example: If you write something like ” How  Conquer Your Leadership Fears” try using an image of King Kong on top of Empire State Building

3. Think about visual style – The style of the image can be just as impactful as the image content. Try mixing and matching styles with content to get your audiences attention. For example: you might use an image of a Slinky painted in the style of Monet.

Here are a few other ideas to make you feel old AND to help you use nostalgia in your marketing.
