Surveys reveal that an incredible 1 in 10 people have dropped their valuable phones into the toilet. While some may struggle with coordination, use certain substances, or have had a few too many drinks, the rest of us truly have no reason for losing hold of the items we care about most.

Many insurance companies report that dropping your phone in the toilet is one of the most common claims for accidental damage. We all understand that water and gadgets don’t mix, yet many of us bring our phones into the bathroom. Some people use them to make calls or send texts, while others use them for fun, like checking Twitter and Facebook or playing games.

Whatever the reason for the phone being in the bathroom, Murphy’s law dictates that accidents will happen, usually when you have just finished entering your extensive list of contacts or decided not to take out the expensive accident insurance. If the unthinkable happens you need to rescue it immediately. If you don’t have any rubber gloves handy try using the toilet brush, or failing that take the plunge and use your fingers. Whatever you do, try not to end up like an unfortunate man in China, who got his arm stuck trying to reach down to retrieve his vital gadget. Footage on China News showed him flushed with embarrassment at being saved by rescue workers!

Once you have retrieved your phone make sure the power is off and follow the simple steps in our infographic to try and fix it. And the next time you find yourself with a few spare minutes, instead of reaching for your phone why not come up with an idea for a nonslip smartphone or a change in the design of the china throne you are sitting on?
