Surveys show an astonishing 1 in 10 of us have actually dropped our precious phones down the toilet. Whilst some may have a problem with co-ordination, take certain substances or have a few drinks too many, the rest of us really do not have an excuse for losing our grip on the things that are most precious to us.

According to several insurance companies dropping your mobile down the toilet is one of the top gadget accidental damage claims. We all know that water and technology aren’t compatible yet many of us take our phones with us when we go to the bathroom. Some people use it to actually make phone calls or send texts, while others use it for entertainment reasons such as keeping up to date with Twitter and Facebook or to play games.

Whatever the reason for the phone being in the bathroom, Murphy’s law dictates that accidents will happen, usually when you have just finished entering your extensive list of contacts or decided not to take out the expensive accident insurance. If the unthinkable happens you need to rescue it immediately. If you don’t have any rubber gloves handy try using the toilet brush, or failing that take the plunge and use your fingers. Whatever you do, try not to end up like an unfortunate man in China, who got his arm stuck trying to reach down to retrieve his vital gadget. Footage on China News showed him flushed with embarrassment at being saved by rescue workers!

Once you have retrieved your phone make sure the power is off and follow the simple steps in our infographic to try and fix it. And the next time you find yourself with a few spare minutes, instead of reaching for your phone why not come up with an idea for a nonslip smartphone or a change in the design of the china throne you are sitting on?
