“Why can’t I get a job?” This question is on the minds of more than half of all recent college graduates, who, though on average are $25,000 in debt, can’t seem to find themselves a job. Some may be quick to blame the economy, but these graduates, made up of those born in the 80s and 90s, known as Generation Y, have more than a recession keeping them out of unemployment.
For one thing, competition is an issue like never before. About 63% of Gen Y workers have a Bachelor’s degree, making most grads overqualified for the jobs they’re actually able to snag. In addition to this, the older, more experienced baby boomer generation is holding off retirement, creating more competition for Gen Y. Plus, Generation Y doesn’t want to move far away and won’t accept jobs where they can’t get on Facebook or Twitter, which plays into their infamous sense of entitlement.
Despite this, these young job-seekers are not only creative, they’re tech-savvy. How will these traits help Generation Y stand out when applying for a job? To learn more about Generation Y and their search for employment, check out the infographic below. Presented by Adecco.
