Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Flipboard 0 Way back in the 17th century life was simple. Avoiding the plague and getting married at 16 was pretty much what to strive for. Until all of that changed with the introduction of a single little flower. When the tulip was introduced to the people of Amsterdam in 1593, everyone went head over heels over them. Tulips were unlike any other flower they had ever seen before and as their popularity grew they began to fetch a pretty penny. The demand became so high that they began to sell tulips on the Amsterdam stock exchange in 1636 and thus begun Tulip Mania. Different varieties of tulips became available, each one more expensive than the next. There came a point when the cost of the Semper Augustus tulip was the same as a luxury house in the heart of Amsterdam. Trading became so frequent and so much money changed hands that the currency seemed to become the tulips themselves! As the demand grew, so did the value. In short, the fortunes of the world change. Sometimes it takes years, sometimes it takes days, and sometimes it takes just a flower. Fortunately the world economy doesn’t revolve around tulips anymore, but there is a shift towards the bitcoin, our very own 2014 version of the Amsterdam tulip. How much do you know about bitcoin? Take a look at this infographic for more because if it’s anything like tulips in 1600 then it’ll pay to be well informed.
