Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Flipboard 0 Did you know that the word geek was first used in 1876, as a synonym for fool? Yep, that’s right. Later, the word was also applied to itinerant artists who earned their living performing on the streets. Well, performing might be a strong word for it, since they basically shredded the head off a live chicken with their teeth or just ate bugs to entertain the crowd. We’re still trying to figure out this word came to designate the current geek: probably because the first modern geeks also earned their living eating bugs, but computer bugs instead of the real ones. As we now know, the definition of geek has changed considerably over time and today there isn’t just one definitive meaning. A geek is no longer associated with the terms dweeb and dork. Maybe we still associate it with the word ‘nerd’, but in a positive way. The expression acquired positive contours especially when technology became truly powerful and its use turned into something generalized. Today, being a geek is super chic! And don’t forget about cool… Still, we might sometimes confuse a true geek with the posers and wannabes that now also want a piece of this nerdy cake. However, it’s easy to distinguish and separate these two classes. Geeks generally suffer from neophilia, an attraction to all that is new, and are consequently fans of computers, technology and the internet. Okay, you might say that everybody is pretty much like this nowadays, but there are still some details that make the true geek. For instance, the ultimate geek will instantly know how to wish you good luck or say goodbye according to the tradition of the planet Vulcan or immediately tell you which city hosts the biggest Comic Con in the world. It’s the small details like this that can set the true geeks apart. Make them go through our awesome test and find out!
