Job hunting can be an extremely stressful time, and constant rejections from applications can send you a bit cuckoo. We’ve all been there, rattling off application after application to no avail, and it’s not a nice place to be.

That said, it’s important to keep your cool when it comes to the job hunt, and not to send yourself completely crazy!

With this in mind, I’ve come up with a few tips that should help make your job search a less stressful situation when all you want to do is scream!

1) Plan Your Days

It might sound obvious, but while you may want to spend every minute of every day applying for jobs in the hope that someone will take you on, it’s important to make space for some “you time”.

Take an hour or two out of your day to unwind and clear your head. Go for a walk, watch TV, or do whatever you want to take your mind off the job hunt. You’ll end up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the next application, rather than tired and fed up.

2) Don’t Focus On One Application

So, you’ve found the perfect job for you – it’s close to home, pays well and you could do the job with your eyes closed. Great!

However – after applying – don’t make the mistake of putting all of your eggs in one basket and failing to apply for anything else. Yes, you might be the best perfect for the role, but don’t run the risk of being left with nothing if you don’t get the job – that will really drive you crazy!

stress3) Don’t Let Rejection Get You Down

There are lots of reasons why people are rejected for roles, so don’t take it personally when you don’t get a job that you really wanted.

The worst thing you can do is obsess over the fact you didn’t get the job. Maybe they hired internally, chose someone more junior or even cancelled the vacancy altogether. So don’t drive yourself crazy trying to figure out what went wrong!

4) Avoid Trying To “Read” The Interviewer

It’s understandable that you want to try and look for a sign from the interviewer about whether you’ve got the job or not – but don’t let it drive you crazy! So they didn’t say they’d call you – that doesn’t mean you’ve blown it! They said it was really nice to meet you – that doesn’t mean you’ve got the job either!

Try not to obsess over what the interviewer did or didn’t say, and just wait for the phone to ring with the answer.

5) Accept It Won’t Happen Overnight

The worst thing you can do during a job hunt is to expect things to happen straight away. Don’t start doubting yourself if you don’t find a job in the first month or two of looking, the best roles may take time to find.

It’s worth being patient and waiting to find one that’s perfect for you, rather than taking any old job and quitting within three months!
